Mutare man stabbed in the face with broken bottle for demanding his change from a hooker

A 24-year-old sex worker was caged 33 months after she stabbed and seriously injured a client with a beer bottle during a dispute over change. The client sustained permanent injuries on the face, head and neck.

Sarudzai Sandra Kumba of Gaza O pleaded not guilty to the charges of assault as defined in section 89(1) (a) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9:23 but was convicted due overwhelming evidence.

Chipinge magistrate Noah Gwatidzo presided over the matter.  Gwatidzo said a lengthy custodial sentence was appropriate since Kumba was not a stranger to the courts and with similar offences.

“You are not a stranger to these courts with similar offences. A lengthy custodial sentence would be appropriate to deter would be offenders,” said Gwatidzo.

Prosecutors told the court that on May 18 around 2300 hours at Yadzonzai Night Club located in Gaza high density suburb, Anesu Mlambo, 21, of ZBS was partaking beer and approached Kumba and asked to go with her for a night.

They agreed on a $20 fee and proceeded to Kumba’s residence where they spent the night together. In the morning, the court heard, Kumba demanded more money instead of the agreed amount.

Mlambo reportedly handed over $100 to Kumba and demanded $80 change since they had already agreed. A misunderstanding arose after Kumba refused to give back the change.

In a fit of rage, Kumba picked an empty beer bottle and hit Mlambo before stabbing him several times on the face and neck while the door was locked.

Mlambo sustained serious injuries and deep cuts near the right ear, head, on the face and the neck. A medical report was produced before the court as evidence. Edith Phiri prosecuted.
